Danxia Mountain, a geological park of the world, lies in Shaoguan City of Guangdong Province. Danxia Mountain is formed from the reddish sandstones which have been eroded over time into a series of mountains. The landform of this mountain represents the typical formation of 1,200 Dianxia landforms found in the world. Occupying an area of 290 square kilometers, Danxia Mountain is the beautiful and unique scenic area in Guangdong Province.
The scenic area of the mountain can be separated into three parts. The first part, namely upper scenic area, includes Zhanglao Peak, Hailuo Peak, Baozhu Peak, Yangyuan Peak and Yinyuan Peak. The two-storey pavilion on Zhanglao Peak, which can accommodate 200 persons, is the best place to watch the sunrise. The middle scenic area is characterized by Biezhuan Temple which was constructed in 16 54 under supervision of a monk for commemorating his master who once expounded Buddhist sutras on this mountain. In the lower scenic area, a natural cave was converted into a Mercy Buddha Hall. There is a peculiar stone which takes on different colors with the changes of four seasons.
The area of Danxia Mountain initially was a large interior basin. The hill around the basin was intensely lifted under the stress of Himalayan orogeny and clastic stones deposited in the basin about from 140 million to 70 million years ago. These clastic stone formed reddish stratum which was also lifted and eroded into the Danxia Mountain.
